Orchestras

There are two orchestras associated with the Ursuline Secondary School, the Intermediate Orchestra for the junior side of the school – conducted by Ms Deborah Quinn and the Senior Orchestra for older and more advanced students – conducted by Ms Joan Butler. The vast majority of the students in the orchestras take their instrumental lessons at St Angela’s Academy. Both orchestras compete regularly in the annual Feis Ceoil music festival and take examinations with the Department of Education.

Group playing is extremely important for students learning music. There is a very different feel to playing alone in a practice room versus playing as a member of a forty-piece orchestra in a big hall. It teaches players to listen to those around them and to learn how to follow a conductor. All students studying orchestral instruments at St Angela’s are encouraged to take part in the orchestras.
